You soon learn why the aliens have asked for you specifically. They aren’t aliens, they’re your dumb friends and their prank has gotten REALLY out of hand.
This is a Netflix original focusing on a female bodyguard and her 20 year old heiress protectee. They’re attacked and have to go on the run together and suss out the mystery of whodunnit.
Noomi Rapace is amazing in the lead role. She did her own stunts and the action feels like something out of Casino Royale or Atomic Blonde: tough and gritty. Every hit lands and they let her look like she’s just fought for her life. I hope she gets more action roles in the future.
The lead of Atomic Blonde was pretty feminine and that’s fine, but it’s also nice that Sam is very low maintenance in her preferred style of dress.
Noomi’s character Sam is marvelously repressed and messed up, with a huge soft spot for the sometimes annoying heiress Zoe who nonetheless shows her mettle by the end in a really satisfying way. At one point Zoe makes a vague attempt at coming on to Sam and is rebuffed; by the end they’re nuzzling foreheads and Sam clearly sees Zoe as too young to consider for dating. But it totally works to consider this a backstory for how they might get together in 5 years or so. Given their trauma, the growing up Zoe needs to do, and the repression that is Sam’s situation normal (all fucked up).
The writer/director has said that the one thing Sam will always have after this is a “very close” relationship with Zoe… so, I feel pretty good about my headcanon here! The canon intent is clearly that they are “found family” of each other in a non-romantic way… and that is legit to appreciate. But the canon allows for a future that could go romantic as well.
Indira Varma plays Zoe’s step-mother. They have a cold, frustrated dynamic. The mystery starts out looking kind of skeevy and “scary middle eastern people” but isn’t what you think. If you want spoilers to reassure yourself on that front, I’ve posted info here and here. Ultimately I thought they addressed the issues involved pretty well. YMMV.
Rewatching one of my all-time fave movies, What Happened to Monday, and in my heightened stage of depression and start of my period; this movie always, always, without a doubt, will make me cry like a slobbering little bitch. Noomi Rapace has a way to tear my heart to shreds.
it’s really funny to be living in the poorest area of California and apartments are STILL impossible to find under $1k a month and then everyone wonders why we have such a big homeless population
You know what I just remembered, but I never really forgot. I was a dealer in high school and not in the sense that you would typically hear. I was a porn dealer. I had a whole separate account that I would give different people the login to, and they would like and follow whatever and whoever they so choose. It was a wild time. Still have the account. If those people are active on it, is far past me. It’s been like 8 years since.
